May vs. Merkel

Theresa May, the woman now running the UK, gave the role of Britain’s Foreign Secretary to Boris Johnson, one of the leaders of the Brexit campaign, a man with a track record of lying and one of the most irresponsible, rude and loudmouthed men in British politics.

So here is what happens, when Boris Johnson refreshingly said something true: He spoke about the situation in the Middle East and spoke of the countries abusing their own religion to further their political objectives: “the Saudis, Iran, everybody, moving in and puppeteering and playing proxy wars.” Prime Minister Theresa May immediately rebutted him with: “the foreign secretary's views are not the government's position on, for example, Saudi Arabia and its role in the region." Of course not, we want to do business with them and who cares about the rest.

What a difference between no-values Theresa May and Germany’s values-led Angela Merkel.

  1. I believe both M&M to hold strong values. The question is rather whether foreign policy is the right domain for application?

  2. Merkel`s "values-led" policies:

Our much esteemed blogger`s view of Mrs. Merkel veers towards the romantic. As is often the case with romantic views, this one also does bear up to closer scrutiny.

Let us take, as just one example - there are others! - her handling of the refugee crisis:

First she invited them all in, not just from Syria, but also from Tunisia, Morocco, Romania and a host of other countries. She didn`t really give a reason for her sudden invitation, she just said "wir schaffen das" (We`ll make it) and took to making selfies with the
    immigrants.

As hundresds of thousands flooded through through the open border she seemed surprised that people actually followed her invitation in such great numbers and began to realize what she had done. Like the sorcerer`s apprentice he started to re-interpret the "We" in the above phrase: Suddenly it was meant to refer to all of Europe. Of course Europe didn`t know about this. After all she hadn`t asked or consulted anybody. The distribution of large numbers of migrants all over the
continent was not accepted by the other 27 states, despite much German bullying.

So next she got up and travelled to Turkey, where she promised many billions of Euros, begging that the Turks keep the Syrians out of her beleagered country. In this endeavour she showed scant concern about the abolition of democracy in Turkey or about the war Turkey wages
against part of its own population.

Nowadays Merkel walks around mumbling "extradition, extradition, extradition" ("Rückführung") in her speeches. She adds that the events of summer 2015 must never happen again. As for "Wir schaffen das", she
claims the phrase was over-interpreted. She no longer uses it.

Merkel`s values are haphazard, her actions are capricious and their consequences are ill considered, if considered at all.
