They make wonderful bread in Sicily – unusual for Italy,
where it is rather difficult to get hold of decent bread. Wherever we ate, the
bread that was served in restaurants was delicious.
Perhaps you've forgotten that Sicily was once reigned by german nobility.You remember Friedrich II., stupor mundi, well known for his thirst for knowledge and his ability to combine all cultures? So the origin of this bread may have been german, :-)
